INVISIBLE ART

The central theme of Stefan Mayer’s art is the uncertain or often missing visual access; essential features and spatial elements remain vague or completely invisible. Through magnetic field interferences, thermodynamic interventions, and random circuits, visual gaps and voids are created. His works range from subtle outdoor interventions to expansive installations in museums and galleries. His current projects primarily occur in conditional locations, public spaces, and urban contexts. These inconspicuous local interventions alter the quality of local connections between points or objects, as well as spatial structures like the global geomagnetic field, both in function and effect.

A site-specific work at the equator, near Macapá, Brazil, where the Earth’s magnetic field runs parallel to the surface. A regulated counter-field brings it to zero for a moment, north and south disappear. Click for detailed information:

„The Invisible as Material“ This lecture traces a path from conceptual art of the 1960s through empirical research in art education, to an ongoing sculptural practice working with invisible physical forces: thermal change and, above all, the Earth’s magnetic field as primary material.

OVERVIEW:

The following examples provide a brief overview of the development of invisible materials, the structuring of spaces through magnetic fields, random circuits, gas columns, and changes in thermal conditions. Each image is a link to detailed pages.

Gegenfeld 2

„Gegenfeld 2“ A magnetic field work in TRIO 12, a group exhibition at Kesselhaus Bamberg

Book: Campos Magnéticos – Magnetfelder 1992-2023

„Invisible art, woven from magnetic fields, challenges the senses of human perception and is a vast new area of contemporary art to be explored. In „Magnetic Fields – Magnetfelder – 1992-2023″, the latest release from Lestu (2024), Stefan Mayer brings together a collection of critical analyses of his work. Professors, journalists and artists come together to produce a fascinating exploration of this concept. Available to read and download from the publisher’s bookshop, the book invites readers to dive into this invisible universe and discover the multiple layers of meaning and perception it offers.“ Kelma Cunha Gallas – Chief Editor (Text). Counterfield Series

Counterfield Roadwork“ and „Counterfield Hotel Series“ – A solar cell-powered electromagnet generates a reversal in the direction and inclination of the earth’s magnetic field in various locations across the USA between May 20 and June 17, 2024. For more information klick on the picture

Random Field

Random field: A spear wrapped in copper wire is thrown approximately in a northerly direction. In its final position, a solar cell is used to generate a random field that locally superimposes the direction and inclination of the earth’s magnetic field. 2023 Italy

Gegenfeld

„GegenFeld“ Streitfeld-Gallery, 2023 Munich:
two electromagnets aligned in the site-specific inclination and declination generate a local reversal of the earth’s magnetic field

Vertical Field Double

„Vertical Magnetic Field – Double“ Stahlzeiten / St.Pauli – 2022 Hamburg
In the workshop for the repair of large clocks, the installation intervenes in the natural order of the earth’s magnetic field.

Vertical Magnetic Field – Balkans

„Balkan Field“
A mobile eletromagenet is powered by a 12V battery. It creates an intervention in the local earth magnetic field in many places of the former Eastern Bloc and neighboring countries. It changes the north-south structure into a vertical alignment 2021

Vertical Magnetic Field – Munich

„Vertical Magnetic Field“ – Plan Z, 2021 Munich
The electromagnet relativizes the north-south structure of the earth’s magnetic field, changing it locally into the one relating top and bottom.

Asphalt Rundown

„Asphalt Rundown – Random Circuit“
Salt water flows down asphalt, hits a contact and creates an electric circuit – or not. Rome, Italy 2016

Gas Clouds and Gas Columns

„two gas cloud sculpture“
cloud sculptures: temporary sculptures with a dynamic character which are created by a brief emission of cheap gas, short-term gas cloud sculpture from two gas sources, with unknown dynamic organizational structure 2019Vertical Magnetic Field

Random Circuits

„Wirework“
Connections of urban objects made of copper wire, a lithium battery and a clamp. Random circuits generated by simple units. Used in an urban or rural context, all wire work or multipolar layouts have an uncertain quality: it always remains open whether the circuit closes at random. 2016-2020

Magnetic Fields

„Declination modules“ (Cologne, Bayreuth)
In the gallery space, minimal cubic magnetic elements generate local changes in the earth’s magnetic field of different characteristics and orientation (2006 Bayreuth)

paraSite

„parasite Series“ (p.e Manaus – Brasil 2003)
Local magnetic field in the harbour of Manaus, copper wire and battery wrapped around rope, 1998-2003

22 electromagnets (each 10000 windings – 2A) installed at 2m height on two counter-rotating semicircles, fill the space with two competing orientation systems

projeto t

Temperature is a non-visually perceivable property of a body, place, or volume. Early projects involved altering indoor temperatures. In 1991, a project with the Goethe Institute implemented temperature-altering interventions in the urban space of São Paulo, creating invisible connections between locations. During this period, the first scientific studies on the formation of heat islands in the centers of major metropolises appeared in São Paulo.
